The Socorro County Courthouse began undergoing restoration work, focused on energy improvement repairs and replacement, in February 2024.

The deterioration of the exterior windows and doors of the building had compromised the integrity of the building’s envelope and structure through water, moisture, and air infiltration. This resulted in a lack of energy efficiency, increased maintenance, and increased operational costs for Socorro County.

Following a Historic Assessment Report prepared by RPA & Associates, LLC, as well as recommendations following the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission Policy Guide for Window Repair or Replacement Requests, a total of eight windows and the main north entry doors were rehabilitated. These windows and doors are concentrated around the north and east entrances and are integral to the character of the historic structure and are the most prominent windows for those visiting the building.

The remainder of the exterior windows and doors were replaced with new energy efficient units which maintain the detailing, proportions, operation/function, and styling and are consistent with the original or existing historic windows. The repair and replacement of exterior windows and doors required the building to be completely restuccoed, patching of the interior plaster, as well as repair, replacement and painting the wood trim on the exterior and staining of wood trim on the interior.

In addition, the replacement of certain existing windows on the second level of the courthouse necessitated the repair, patching and replacement of roofing due to the current roofing system abutting operable windows in an undesirable manner. The project also included the modernization of the elevator system and a new sign on the exterior of the building.

Work included restoring eight windows, replacing 80+ windows and doors, restoring the main north entry doors, modernizing the elevator system, and restoring the entrance sign to welcome visitors.
