508 1st St Renovation

City of Albuquerque and 516 Arts | Albuquerque, NM

Project Description
Renovation for a non-collecting contemporary art museum dedicated to fostering youth empowerment

Design Team
Formative Architecture + Wes Lansford Architecture

Formative Architecture partnered with 516 ARTS and the City of Albuquerque to reimagine 508 1st Street as a dynamic cultural destination in the heart of downtown Albuquerque.

The project integrates a variety of public and support spaces, including a reception area, primary exhibition gallery, gift shop, flexible event space, media gallery, artist studios, and back-of-house functions into a cohesive environment that celebrates art, education, and community engagement.

Particular attention was given to visitor circulation, interpretive opportunities, and the relationship between public gathering spaces and exhibition areas.

The design embraces the building’s layered history, incorporating architectural elements that acknowledge its past as an ice house while celebrating its more recent role as a community gathering place for teenagers to learn new skills and express their creativity. Existing murals and graffiti art are preserved as authentic artifacts of the building’s community identity, allowing its story to remain visible within the renewed space.

A striking blue cube at the entrance serves as a contemporary interpretation of an ice cube, creating an iconic arrival experience and referencing the site’s industrial heritage.

Located along the future Albuquerque Rail Trail, the facility is envisioned as a cultural gateway that will connect residents and visitors to the city’s arts community while catalyzing neighborhood revitalization.

This project demonstrates Formative Architecture’s ability to create meaningful cultural spaces that balance storytelling, education, and operational functionality.
